Many early projects were funded primarily by members “passing of the hat” and of course there was the annual sale of peanuts or fruitcakes or whatever else anyone could come up with.
By far, our best fund raiser is our Pancake Day, which started in the 1960’s. Traditionally, we serve close to 1000 pancake meals! In addition to the pancake meals, our members sell 50/50 raffle tickets. The proceeds from this twice-a-year event provide the funds for our many service projects. These Pancake days have become a tradition in the Bowling Green community.
In recent years, the club has added a spring fundraising activity of selling Daffodils. The daffodils are offered to Kiwanian members, members of the community and local businesses so that they can gift a bouquet of spring daffodils to be delivered to their friends, employee staff members or residents of the local senior living facilities or local shut-ins. The funds raised are placed in the general fund to support the many projects that members participate in.
Another rather new fundraising event is to sponsor a fall Cornhole Community Tournament with the funds being specifically provided to the Wood County Committee on Aging for their “Grandparents raising Grandchildren” Holiday Project.
The WBGU-PBS station in the Tucker Telecommunications Center at BGSU was the scene of our October 23 meeting. Kiwanian and Associate General Manager for Development and Community Outreach Lindsay Miller was our host and Call of the Canyon Cafe was our caterer. We heard inspiring words about Duane and Margaret Tucker from Bob Callecod. Secretary and Acting President Cindy Hofner presented a check for the proceeds of our Cornhole Tournament to Kiwanian Alisha Nenadovich and Danielle Brogley of the Wood County Committee on Aging. Larry Weiss, who organized our October programs, introduced Tom Cummings, WBGU-PBS General Manager, and Kelly Pheneger, Director of Education and Outreach, who brought us up to date on the history and activities of our local public television station. ... Today, at our October 16 meeting, we welcomed Past President Gregg DeCrane back to the club and heard Kiwanian and Executive Director of The Cocoon Kathy Mull talk about this important institution's achievements over its 20 years of existence.
